When you think about what the great state of California is known for, you might be tempted to think about sunny skies, sandy beaches and rolling waves.  While that’s certainly understandable given the fact that California is known as the golden state, you might be surprised to learn that some of California’s greatest treasures are found inside – in art galleries, to be exact!  In this article, we will take a closer look at art galleries found in northern California.

California’s Fishing Industry: Bringing Job Stability Catch by Catch

California is known for many things, but you might not realize that fishing happens to be near the top of the list.  Sound surprising?  It shouldn’t be – the fishing industry in California currently ranks in the top five of seafood producing states out of the entire U.S.  Delivering hundreds of millions of pounds of seafood to markets each year, this industry is quickly becoming one of the best sources of jobs in the state of California, with jobs ranging from catching and processing the seafood to suppliers that work with the industry.  In addition to providing a high number of jobs for California residents, the state is also benefited by the stability that the jobs bring.

 

A variety of jobs isn’t the only varied thing in the California seafood industry!  Scientists estimate that over 300 different types of fish and shellfish call California their home.  Some of the most well known types of fish harvested in California include mackerel, California halibut, sablefish (also known as black cod) sharks and even tuna.

 

When it comes to shellfish, California delivers in that market as well, offering everything from California spiny lobster to prawns.  Fishing is regulated by either the California Legislature or the California Fish and Game Commission, and both impose strong regulations in order to keep the industry in check.  In addition, the Pacific Fishery Management Council was created to combat unregulated fishing in US waters from foreign entities.  The council is comprised of individuals who represent the recreational and commercial fishing industries as well as individuals such as biologists and economists.  Any decision that is made by this council is brought before the U.S. Secretary of Commerce for approval before it is enacted.

Hot Days Equal Poor Fishing

After several days in a row with above 90-degree temps in the Queen City, the fish in Lake Norman began sporting a nice yellowy color. This is because they thrive in a cooler environment. When the water is cool and shallow, the fish get more sunlight near the surface. When the temperature started to soar in early July, the fish retreated to the deep waters where the cooler temperatures remain. They tell me that the fish are completely fine to eat, but I’m not buying that stink bait.

In smaller ponds, the warmer temperatures have caused an overgrowth of algae in the water. When the algae move in, the fish start dying off. They do not get the necessary oxygen and sunlight they need to survive. I never did much fishing in the ponds anyway. It doesn’t make for good eating, but still these warmer temperatures can really take a toll on the local ecosystem.

If you’re looking for a good place to go fishing near Charlotte, then I suggest the Catawba River. The moving waters and the fact that it is fed from high in the mountains keeps the water cool. This is prime time for catfish, although they tend to hang out near the dams, reservoirs, and where there are extremely deep waters. Less than a foot is optimum length for the catfish. You won’t have to wonder if their yellowy color is harmful. They stay near the bottom all the time.

There are also many creeks near and around Charlotte. Anyone of these could be a great place to find the perfect fishing hole. Just avoid those still waters until after the heat wave moves on out, just to be on the safe side.

Why I Love to Fish

Fishing is one of my favorite activities. It is something I have enjoyed since I was a kid and my brother and I would go down to the creek behind our house on weekend mornings and see what we could catch.

I love that it can be done in all kinds of water, so I have gotten to fly fish out West, deep sea fish in the Caribbean, and trout fish in the rivers and lakes near my home. I like using both live and artificial bait, as both will net (pun intended) different catches. If something is working particularly well as bait in a certain spot, I will stick with it for sure.

Night fishing is another favorite of mine – it’s calm and quiet, and some fish only come out to feed at night, which makes it fun and challenging. One of my best hauls ever came on a night hunt when I happened upon a large group of catfish feeding near the riverbank. It was like they were just waiting for me to come with my bait!

I think, though, the thing that I love most about fishing is when I get to go alone. I enjoy going with friends and family, but sometimes I just go out by myself to spend the day on the shore or the riverbank and use that time to think. It allows me to clear my head, sort out problems in my mind, and just relax. I come home refreshed and renewed, and ready to face the next day. Fishing is not only a great hobby, but a wonderful way to relax and recharge.

Are You Ready to Try Salt Water Fishing?

Salt-water fishing is different than any other fishing. Many times people will go out on huge boats and fish from there. Others will fish right off the shore or a pier. People from all over the world love to fish at the beach. Many times people will make weekends of it and eat their catches for dinner. Salt-water fishing is done a little different than other fishing as well. Whether you are a beginner or a veteran at salt-water fishing, there are 3 steps you need to know.

#1:Fish love to be around submerged things. It could be poles or rock ledges that attract them to hang out in that spot. Look for these spot when you are trying to find somewhere to fish. These will be spots that are going to have many fish and you can for sure catch something here.

#2: Sharks can disturb fishing for any individual. They like to feast on the fish you are trying to catch so if they are around, they will definitely hinder you catching anything. A good way to get rid of them is to take a paper towel or rag and put fish blood all over it. Ball it up and throw it in the water. This will move along with the tide and the sharks will follow it wherever it goes. This will move them from your area and now the fish you want to catch will be in plenty.

#3: Stay on deck if you are experiencing queasiness. The last thing you want to do is try to fish while you are feeling sick or getting sick. This can ruin your time and the time of the people with you.

There will always be things that won’t go your way when fishing. Just remember to be patient and wait for the fish. They are there, it just takes some time and with these tips, you may have a great day at it.

What I Can Afford on a Fisherman’s Salary

Fishing is not an easy business. You never know what is going to go wrong. If I was smart I would probably find a different, more secure job, but I love the sea and can’t think of anything I would rather be doing.

Apart from the weather, one of the biggest problems I have to deal with is insurance. There are so many things that need to be insured. When I think about how much money I spend each year just on insurance it makes me see red. Still, I pay the bills and try to keep my grumbling to a minimum. After all, I would hate to have something go horribly wrong and be without insurance. It isn’t like I can really afford the cost of a brand new fishing boat if mine suddenly sank. So I do what I can to keep my insurance costs down as much as I can, including combining my motor trader insurance that I have on both mine and my wife’s cars with my home insurance.

Since fishing is such a fickle career, I try to supplement my income with some rental properties. A little over a year ago, one of the properties that I rent out to this young guy who has hopes of becoming the next George Clooney got damaged in a really minor earthquake. The young man and I did everything we were supposed to. He filed a claim with the company that handles his renters insurance and quickly got reimbursed for damages done to his clothing and motorcycle. I filed a claim with the company that handles my landlord insurance so that I could afford to fix the damage that had been done to the roof. I waited and waited for the check to come, but nothing happened. I knew I had bought the cheapest landlord insurance I could find, but it was a legitimate claim. There was no reason for them to be taking so long with the check.

I knew I was going to have to start considering my legal options, but since that was going to mean legal bills, I was dragging my feet. It was my daughter who suggested that I use the internet, saying that it was a great source of information when it came to situations like mine. Even though I don’t know much about the internet, I decided to give it a shot. After all, I didn’t have anything to lose.

The first search turned up a site about free legal advice UK. I didn’t know how a UK site was going to help me out with my problem here in California, yet when I accidently clicked something it led me to an electoral roll search free which actually provided me with information about a community service program that was run by young lawyers in my county. One of the lawyers listened to my story and then contacted the insurance company. Two weeks later I had cashed the check and my roof was repaired.

Documenting My Fishing Adventures for Friends and Family

I’ve been fishing since I was just a little boy living in Round Rock, but I really fell in love with it as a teenager.  My friends and I would pack up our pickup trucks with camping supplies and our fishing rods and we would head to the lake and spend nearly every weekend during the summer months.  As an adult, working on a charter fishing boat was a natural choice.

 

I have been working out on the waters in the great state of Alaska for three years now and I love it!  The only down side is that when we go out fishing we are gone for days at a time.  It is hard to stay in touch with friends and family when you are out on the water.  Plus, a lot of my family still lives in Wisconsin, in either Madison or Milwaukee.  That is why I recently decided to start a blog to document my life as a charter fisherman.

 

My family loves to read about my adventures and I have fun posting pictures of the fish I catch and the process of cleaning and preparing them for sale.  My family started telling their friends and neighbors about my fishing adventures and soon I was gaining new readers every day.  That is why I decided to take my blog to the next level with professional website design.

 

When my parents heard that I was interested in getting a website design makeover, they offered to pay for it as a gift to me for my birthday.  I thought that was a fabulous idea and I agreed not to log on for an entire week leading up to my birthday.  They wanted the design to be a surprise for me and I felt confident that the designers would come up with something great.

 

On my birthday, I grabbed my laptop to check out my new blog design and I loved it instantly.  The Milwaukee website design professionals did an excellent job.  My parents gave me the following advice by email in case I ever wanted to build another site:

A Fisherman’s Dirty Little Secret

Fishing is a dirty job.  You are out on the ocean where the salt water creates a thick film on your skin and in your hair.  You are handling bait and fish all day.  At the end of the day, I am filthy!  I’ve been doing commercial fishing for about ten years and I really enjoy my job.  I just hate how dirty I am at the end of the day.  I also have a lot of sore muscles from all of the lifting and moving that I do.

 

A few months ago, my chiropractor was marveling at the amount of knots in my neck and he suggested that I find a way to let my muscles relax a little between visits.  He suggested that I visit a spa and soak in one of the therapeutic Jacuzzis at least three times a week.  The thought of long leisurely soaks in Jacuzzi tubs did sound nice, so I started checking into local spas to see what memberships would cost.

 

I was blown away by what those places charged just to use the basic facilities!  There was no way that I could shell out that much money each month on my fishing budget.  Instead, I decided to try to save up money and install one of the nice two person tubs on my back deck.  I had always wanted one of the outdoor bath tubs like you see on television, but it never seemed practical before.

 

I did some shopping online and soon I found that you could get the best whirlpool tubs for a really reasonable price when you bought through wholesale dealers.  I placed my order and waited eagerly for my tub to arrive.  Once it was delivered, it didn’t take long to set it up and fill it with water.  I waited while it warmed and then the next night, I enjoyed my first soak.

 

Now you know my dirty little secret.  I might be a rough and tough fisherman during the day, but at night you will find me lounging in my outdoor Jacuzzi.  I love my outdoor spa and I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world!  It has made a big difference for my back and shoulder pain too.

My New Love: Blue Marlin Tournaments

A couple of weeks ago I was invited to be part of a crew that was going to be competing in a Blue Marlin fishing contest. Even though I have never fished for Blue Marlin in my life, I thought it sounded like it could be an interesting experience, so I accepted the invite.

I’ve gone sports fishing before, but all of those outings suddenly seem tame now that I’ve caught a blue marlin. These fish are fighters. I can understand why Hemingway wrote a book about them. If you have ever pulled in a feisty trout, you know how exhilarating the fight is. Marlins are a lot bigger (the can weigh up to 1000 lbs.), a lot stronger, and create a much larger surge of adrenaline.

It turns out that Marlin tournaments are a really big deal. In Hawaii alone millions of dollars are handed out every single year just to fishermen who are competing in the Hawaiian Marlin competitions. Since the prizes are so high, there are lots of people who actually try to make a living by entering one competition or tournament after another. I learned that winning these tournaments isn’t easy.

First, you have to have a boat and crew, second you have to know where the big Marlin is going to be. Any Marlin that is less than 500lbs will not be able to be used in the competition. Different states and regions can have some very different rules regarding what fish can and can’t be caught during the tournament, so it is important to always double check not just the contest rules, but also the area’s fishing license requirements.

Now that I’ve participated in one Blue Marling fishing contest, I can’t wait to go out and be part of a team during another one. It can’t believe how good a time I had.

Rejecting Bingo Stereotypes for Good
